Chapter Fourteen

Dominic

Things were getting worse. Students were still going to sleep and not waking up. My mother had called the rest of the princes and I into a meeting with the faculty and the other monarchs, including the Nightmare King this morning. Two students who had left campus to return to their families had fallen asleep and not woken up. People were panicking. There were calls to send more people to the campus to try to work out what was happening. But that was being tempered by concerns that anyone they sent would find themselves in the same situation.

The little kitten hadn’t been in the meeting. Tiernan had said she was already gone when he woke up that morning, which was unusual. She usually joined us in the kitchen for at least one cup of coffee before she went anywhere. I had wanted to go looking for her, but Dorian was insistent that she was probably just getting an early start in the library that morning. He was usually right, so I let it go.

Sarah had sent me two messages while I was in the meeting telling me she needed to speak to me. For her, that was the equivalent of blowing my phone up, so I was on my way over to the Summer dorms to put out whatever fire needed my attention. It had to be bad, if she was calling me in.

“Hey asshole!” The words echoed around me, called out from behind me. Now it wasn’t the first time I had been called that name, so it wasn’t a leap to assume they were talking to me. Also, I knew that voice. A sigh worked its way out of my lungs, and I pinched my nose. I wasn’t in the mood for this, but I turned anyway, coming face to face with the little kitten’s Norn friend again.

“If you want a rematch, Jean, this is not the place for it. You know the rules. Sign up for fight night. Sarah will schedule the match.” The thought of fighting her again wasn’t a terrible one. It had been an interesting match. She fought hard, tenacious, and was not above being vicious when she needed to.

That didn’t make her a match for me, but I had no problem beating someone down if they insisted.

Watching her roll her eyes made my own eyes narrow. Her attitude was going to give me a headache. I could just feel it.

“Where the hell is Mara? Classes are important to her. You can’t all keep her in your house like some sort of live-in sex doll, fated mate or not.” She was in my personal space, her finger jabbing into my chest, anger clear across every inch of her. Any annoyance at the impertinence was squashed by what she had said.

“What do you mean, where is Mara? She left the house early this morning. Probably to grab some time in the library. She and Dorian have been there at all hours, trying to gain more information about what is going on.
